A Solemn Dance

It's a Solemn Dance,  with"Mourning" and "Thanksgiving" as the Partners.  It can be confusing, frustrating, and oftentimes, the unknown of it all can make you physically sick.
At points, this Dance is intensely precious, passionate, and beautiful - so much so, you want to hold on each part, every picture in your mind, hoping to fully grasp the intense feelings it can bring.  You may not fully understand, but you know it is Holy and can only come from God.
This Dance - the coinciding of these intensely genuine, human emotions, awkwardly trying to find balance; giving and taking, back and forth, fighting to make something beautiful . . .
THIS, is Suffering for the Believer.

Thanksgiving was a sweet time of reflection and gratefulness for our family and we were blessed by the presence of Mike's Parents, Stan and Jayme.  As you may know, in October, Stan was diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer, which has metasticized.  He is determined to live-out more days on earth with his family, yet the chemo and cancer have started to ravage his body - this tall, strong man who played college basketball; the Paw Paw we cheerfully call, the "Pied Piper", because the grandchildren follow him around like little ducklings.  He is kind, a gentle-giant, and it hurts our hearts to see him struggling.  What a GIFT it was to be in Stan's presence this Thanksgiving!

Lucy and Paw Paw, 2014

Sweet Lucy slept most of Thanksgiving Day, but we did have some sweet moments when she was lucid and awake.  Her body is brutally thin, her hair starting to fall out.  She hardly has any energy at all, yet there are times when we hear her precious giggle and laughter, even in the middle of the night.  Last evening, Lucy started throwing up with each feeding, no matter how small the amount that was given.  She's been weak, pale and often trembles, but on Thanksgiving she joined us in the living room as we sat around, sharing all we were thankful for.  At the top of the list: Thanksgiving for another Holiday to spend with Stan and Lucy.

Last evening, we had the honor of decorating Stan and Jayme's home for Christmas, which was a special request from Stan.  Tonight, we start decorating my Parent's house, mainly with Lucy in mind.  Something about the warm glow of the lights, the colors all around the house, the smells and sounds that come with it all - it brings comfort, love and a familiarity that is . . . HOME.  It's something we all want during the Holidays, especially for these family members who are suffering so in the physical realm.  I cannot wait to see Lucy's face when she sees the lights and the tree!

Oh Lord, Why Now?
Why would you allow all of this suffering AGAIN,
during the same Holiday Season?
 Isn't one time enough
with Ellie Kate's death, December 23rd?

It's been five years since we buried Our Girl and now,
TWO more members of our family
firmly face earthly death
if not for a complete miracle for God.

My heart grows weary and cries out often.

Oh, Ya'll!  It's hard not to despair completelyknowing these Precious Ones suffer so!  And on a MUCH-lower level, I find myself tempted to despair over my feelings of loss and heartache, as well as anticipation of what I KNOW is coming.  It's compounded by feelings of not having our own space, as we are selling our house, and continue to live with my Parents (who so graciously have allowed us here).  I long for our own space, especially this time of year, as silly as it sounds.  Admittedly, this is THE very hardest time of year for me, personally and for our family - Ellie Kate's birthday on December 4th, leading up to her Heaven Day on December 23rd, followed by the festivities of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  Of course, our Dear Bowen Jane's FIRST Birthday ALSO falls on December 23rd too.  There are many mixed emotions flooding my heart, mind and body; intense thoughts and memories.  Sometimes it feels my emotions swing like a pendolum, back and forth, from one extreme to another . . . and right now, it  compounds the feelings of knowing nothing seems to have it's place

When God has done SO MUCH for us, providing miracles for Our Family through precious people, many times, it is still a battle to overcome the sadness, the sorrow, and the mourning for the future and for what we know will come.

The Holidays can be BRUTAL,
and not just for Our Family.

I know so many of you are in similar circumstances, feeling similar things this Season, many fighting depression and darkness; hopelessness and despair.
You KNOW God has been incredibly good and yet,
at times, the circumstances surrounding you seem too heavy to bear.
You aren't alone.

It's during these times, I am drawn to God's Word;
the Precious Words of Life
the ONLY never-changing Truths
in this broken, scarred-filled World.

Rest in knowing you aren't alone:
for Ages, Fellow Believers have joined us in this very longing . . .

Romans 8:23 ,"And even we asChristians, although we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, also groan to be released from pain and sufferingWe, too, wait anxiously for that day when God will give us our full rights as his children, including the new bodies he has promised us—bodies that will never be sick again and will never die".

Rest in knowing there is Purpose in Suffering:

Romans 5:3,4  . . . "Wrejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame".

Romans 8:17 ,"And since we are his children, we will share his treasures—for all God gives to his Son Jesus is now ours tooBut if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering".

Rest in knowing God comforts Us in every Season:

2 Corinthians 1:3-5,"What a wonderful God we havehe is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the source of every mercy, and the one who so wonderfully comforts and strengthens us in our hardships and trials. And why does he do this? So that when others are troubled, needing our sympathy and encouragement, we can pass on to them this same help and comfort God has given us. You can be sure that the more we undergo sufferings for Christ, the more he will shower us with his comfort and encouragement . . . "

There is Purpose in EVERY
heartache and suffering, Friend.

For Centuries, Believers everywhere have experienced deep disapointment and loss,
somehow intertwined with joy and thanksgiving;
surely, we too can move forward
in Faith as they did.

Through every Season, even in those which seem confusing or all-too-heavy,
HE IS OUR COMFORT.
God is with us every step of the way,
always and forever.

December 1st is upon us, and "Ellie Kate's Month of Reckless Love" will soon begin!  It's an entire month, Ellie's Month, dedicated to loving and serving others in reckless, unexpected, over-the-top ways.  I cannot wait for it to begin!  FIVE years - it just doesn't seem possible that we've spent FIVE Christmases without Our Eldest Daughter, our Brown-Haired-Beauty, whose green eyes glistened with every giggle.

This year, in honor of Ellie Kate and in celebration of her month, we'll be adopting THREE Hope Link Families.  Hope Link is the Foundation (501c3) birthed in 2007, when the Lord first revealed our Pre-Destined Mission as a couple, as a family, and as individuals: loving and serving families within the medically-fragile and special needs communities; families like oursHope Link seeks to serve families of children with rare, serious and undiagnosed disorders.  Several of our families have already lost children to their rare diseases and disorders as well.  It will be a JOY to bless THREE of our families with Christmas this year and I hope you make plans to participate!

Also this year, in celebration of Ellie Kate's Fifth Heaven Anniversary, we will be fulfilling, "Ellie's Wish", which reaches to our extended NKH Family, all around the world.  Families apply for specific things their child with NKH may need and YOU will have the opportunity to help grant that wish!  "Ellie's Wish" joins NKH Crusaders in blessing and providing for these precious NKH children, and I cannot wait to see their needs met.

Thank you in advance,
for preparing to participate in
Ellie Kate's Month of Reckless Love.
It means more than you could know
especially on this milestone anniversary
of EK's Heaven Day.

More information will soon be posted,
and I pray you will be watching
in excitement and anticipation,
ready to love and serve with Ellie Kate in mind.

In Mourning and Thanksgiving,

Ryan

Grateful Hearts and a God who is Faithful and True

Precious Friends, December is now upon us, and it hardly seems possible that Ellie Kate's ELEVENTH birthday is this Sunday!  It is now officially, "Ellie Kate's Month of Reckless Love" and in honor of our "reckless love" efforts this month, we invite you to change your Facebook profile to one of the pictures below to help us spread the word!

First off, I want to thank you for the many ways you've already loved and served the specific families God has led us to focus on this year. It's just the beginning of December and already, we've had packages come to our door, "In Honor of Ellie Kate"!  I will never tire of seeing her name on the packages YOU have provided for others.  Our entire family giggles and jumps up and down when we open the packages each night, looking to see what the Lord has brought to the families we're collectively giving to!  I could never fully convey our gratefulness, but please know that you honor us and honor Ellie Kate when you give, serve, provide for, and pray for these particular families.

Christmas Gifts for Families!

Secondly, I want to apologize for my tone in the last blog entry.  Friends, you got to see the real and raw feelings of a mourning momma, that's for sure.  Here's the thing though, in those moments, in that situation, I wasn't giving this all up to the Lord.  I wasn't giving HIM control of this all-important-month and because of that, I was more down and defeated than I needed to be!  When I last wrote, it wasn't yet December and I was already worried that gifts wouldn't be purchased and that these families would be left without their needs or wishes granted . .  . Oh ME of little faith! God told us to dedicate the month of December in this way and this year, He has once again shown us what and who to focus the "Reckless Love" upon.  Oh, Friends!  THE most important thing I have learned in these (almost) four years since losing Ellie Kate from this life, is that GOD IS FAITHFUL AND TRUE.  We are following His direction and He will see it through - no matter how many participate, HE will provide and HE will get the glory.  That's what this life is all about.

A little Scriptural Truth to show God's Character as Faithful and True

Psalm 78:35
And they remembered that God was their rock, And the Most High God their Redeemer.
Proverbs 23:11
For their Redeemer is strong; He will plead their case . . .

Psalm 33:4
For the word of the LORD holds true, and we can trust everything he does.
Revelation 19:11
I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war.

Reckless Love (the Mike and Ryan definition):
Reckless Love is taking intentional action in order to benefit the life of another
without worrying about the consequences.

Through this roller-coaster ride has allowed our family to be enveloped by the special needs world, along with the world of child-loss, and those who are medically fragile.  God has taught us so many precious things.  After all, He does not cause or allow things to happen without a purpose.  Through Sweet Ellie Kate's life and all we've lived through, all we've experienced; through the intimate ways the Body of Christ has surrounded us, we have learned more about reckless love than we ever knew was possible!  In the past four years specifically, we've learned more about ourselves, our marriage, our living children; we've learned more about the beautiful Body of Christ, at work in their own giftings, even when hasn't been convenient, even when it's meant sacrificing, even when we've let them down . . . The Body has stayed with us through the eleven years of this journey, all because of the reckless love of Christ.  It's simply the only explanation of why someone, who brought us meals in December 2005, still brings us meals in December 2016 - It's because of the works of Father, Son and Holy Spirit within the hearts of man, not because of anything good man has done, but solely because God created us and loves us!

We long for the world around us to see, taste and feel this same reckless love, and the month of December, the month of Ellie's birth and the month of her death, is the time we've dedicated and invited those around us to participate in acts of service, sacrifice and love.  Specifically, we ask that you take part in providing for the following families which the Lord has laid on our hearts.  You can do just that by clicking on one of the following lists in BLUE, by providing something that is listed, or even something God has laid on your heart to give.

Christmas Family Adoption 2016

The Williams Family, whom we've adopted this year for Christmas is in great need of almost everything, as they hardly have any possessions of their own. They are in need of everything from jeans to blankets, from home decorations to pantry items.

We ask only that you get all items to us by December 18th
in order for them to be wrapped and delivered in time for Christmas Morning.

"Ellie's Wish" for fellow NKH Families from around the World

As part of the Ellie Kate Wish Fund through NKH Crusaders (which is the main organization supporting NKH families as well as NKH research around the world), these special Amazon Wish Lists were created specifically by individual NKH families.  These particular families were chosen because of their involvement within the NKH Community and because of the needs
of their special needs/medically fragile children and other "typical/healthy" children as well
(siblings often feel left out as so much attention has to be given to the child who is sick).
Gifts include items not covered by insurance as well as
special Christmas gifts for NKH children and their siblings.

Would you please consider purchasing an item off one of our NKH Family's Wish Lists (click on the link below to see each Amazon Wish List)?
Each item will be directly mailed to the proper family.

NKH Family 4

God is so good to change my heart and perspective over the last few days.  That doesn't mean I am not hurting physically, mentally and emotionally.  It doesn't mean we are pretending that all is okay, ignoring our feelings and thoughts of Ellie Kate's birthdays and parties in the past.  It just means for now, in this moment, I've been able to give it all to the Father.  He gives me immense joy in knowing other people will be greatly blessed in His name and in Ellie's honor this year.

If you are holding tight to heartache or bitterness like I was in my last post; if you are struggling in only seeing the bad or can't seem to stop wallowing in your current situations, try sincerely praying and giving it all to the Father.  There are no magic words or rhymes - just a humble spirit, crying out to God for help.  He hears you.  He knows you.  He loves you (no matter what, always and forever).  God IS faithful and true and He can unveil that truth to you now.  Believe me - even if it's a constant struggle to continue to give it over to God and to put it in His hands, it's worth it.  Leaving your problems in HIS hands and out of YOURS brings supernatural, sweet freedom and I am hoping you can find that even now!

Sweet Freedom!

The Month of Reckless Love - Join us in the Celebration!

Oh, My Friends!  You precious people who have followed our story from the beginning (December 2005), those who've jumped in along the way, and those who are brand new to Our Journey in this life of special-needs and medical fragility . . . each of you, ALL of you, just simply MUST KNOW that having you by our side has helped us to get through it all.

It's been difficult this year, in particular, to force myself to sit and write about this upcoming celebration of Ellie Kate's life and the Month of Reckless Love.  OH, how I long to celebrate Our Daughter with you!  And OH, how our hearts continue to hear the call to recklessly love the world around us, calling others to do the same! And yet, grief seeps in, sweeps in, roars in at times - even when you don't want it to.  We will be marking four years without Ellie Kate.  We will be celebrating what would be Ellie's 11th birthday.  My fears this Season are real - since it's been so long, I'm afraid we won't have people commit to these special projects, even though they still love us.  It's so easy to move on with life, and natural to do so.  For us though, life is changed forever and it will never go back to "normal" again.

To us, this Celebration isn't "just" an event or a mere call to action.. This is a life-marker for us, each and every year.  It's our Ebenezer ( ‘Thus far the Lord has helped us’ 1 Samuel 7:12). and with each year, we add a stone representing the outpouring of love specifically shown because of Ellie Kate. With all of this in mind, you can imagine just how important these efforts of reckless love are to us!

For Ellie Kate's Month of Reckless Love this year, we will be doing the following:

1. Williams Family Christmas Adoption - This is a precious family we have come to know well and they are very dear to our hearts.  The family's needs are great and we had to really push them to list things other than groceries, socks and underwear on their Christmas Wish Lists.

You can provide for the Williams Family in the following ways:
  • Purchase something directly from the Williams Amazon Wish List - the item will be mailed to our home where we will wrap them and give them to the family
  • Purchase items similar to those on the Amazon Wish List (the family is NOT particular about where their gifts come from), then contact me directly about wrapping and pick-up plans
  • Clothing items for each family member:
    • Mom - size Large, mediums, size 9 shoe
    • 14yo Daughter - size large, mediums, size 9 shoe
  • Give other items needed by the family:
    • grocery gift cards (Walmart)
    • car (they currently have no vehicle)
    • job for momma (she is currently out of work, but wants to!)
    • basic pantry items and toiletries
    • furniture - mattresses are currently on the floor, and there are no dressers for their belongings
    • laptop or computer for the 14yo daughter that she can use for school (can be new or used)
    • Gift Card Ideas - Hot Topic, Ross, KMart, Shawnee Mall, fast food
2. "Ellie's Wish" through NKH Crusaders - this special fund set up in Ellie Kate's name, is solely purposed to bless and serve fellow NKH families around the world.  With the help of many of YOU, we recently held a table auction for this fund at the NKH Crusaders Fundraiser in Boston.  Because of some great donations, we were able to do a small Facebook auction to raise money for this as well.
Since we have not met our goal of $2,000 for Ellie's Wish, we have set up an Amazon list full of needed and requested items from our approved NKH families.  This list allows you to directly mail your item to our NKH family members around the world . . .

We ask that  all gifts be purchased no later than December 18th

3.  December 4th - Ellie Kate's Birthday; help us celebrate in one of the following ways:
  • Tell someone about Ellie Kate - tell them her story
  • Tangibly love someone around you who has a disability OR who has a child with a disability.  If you feel comfortable, tell the recipient about your friend, Ellie Kate.
  • Tangibly love someone around you who recently lost a loved one OR who has a loved one who is medically fragile/critically ill.  If you feel comfortable, tell the recipient about your friend, Ellie Kate.
4.  December 23rd - Ellie Kate's Heaven Day:
  • Join us in releasing balloons in Ellie Kate's honor, anytime and anywhere.
  • If possible, take a photo of your balloon release and share it on social media
